The first step to becoming a disciple is hearing and believing the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faith comes by hearing the Word, and through it we understand that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again for our justification. As Scripture says, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17), and “whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36). Discipleship begins when we respond to this Good News with repentance and faith, surrendering our lives to Jesus as Lord and Savior.
After believing, we follow Christ in baptism and a life of continual growth in knowledge and obedience to His Word. Jesus commanded, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). A disciple doesn’t stop at baptism, but presses on to maturity: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18), and proves love for Him through obedience: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). We walk this journey together as a church family, helping one another follow Jesus daily.
